Wild West, Old West, Western - all refer to an American frontier period of the Western United States in the 19th century. A Western genre stresses the harshness of the wilderness, frequently exaggerating the romance and violence of the period. Western characters include cowboys, Native Americans, Mexicans, bandits, lawmen, outlaws and soldiers.
