GRID STEP. You can print out the base construction lines and start drawing on tracing paper or you can draw the grid layout yourself using the following steps.
1) Draw a rectangle that will define the conditional proportions and boundaries of the chosen drawing. 2) From the middle of the rectangle, draw one vertical and one horizontal line equally dividing the shape. 3) Draw another horizontal line equally dividing the upper half of the rectangle. Similarly, draw a horizontal line equally dividing the bottom half of the rectangle. 4) Draw a vertical line equally dividing the left half of the rectangle. Similarly, draw a vertical line equally dividing the right half of the rectangle.

STEP 1. Mark off the width and height of the picture. Add two ovals for the horse’s head and body. Divide its head into two parts. Draw guidelines for the cowgirl. Outline the shape of her head.
STEP 2. Draw the torso and neck of the horse. Add guidelines for the cowgirl’s body.
STEP 3. Add guidelines for the arms of the cowgirl and the legs of the horse. Line its mouth.
STEP 4. Draw the chest and neck of the cowgirl. Sketch the legs of the horse.
STEP 5. Outline her arms and legs. Add guidelines for her hat. Define the snout and tail of the horse.
STEP 6. Detail the horse’s legs. Add its ears, eyes, saddle and nose. Draw the clothes, facial features, ears and fingers of the cowgirl.
STEP 7. Work on the figures, paying special attention to small details.
STEP 8. Contour the figures, trying to vary the thickness and darkness of the line. Add more details and the ground. Erase all guidelines.
